GST in one minute
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) replaced many indirect taxes in India from 1 July 2017. It is collected at each stage of supply, and businesses can claim credit for the GST they paid on their purchases (input tax credit).
CGST, SGST and IGST
- Within a state: CGST goes to the Centre and SGST to the state
- Between states, and on imports: IGST is charged
- Union Territories without a legislature use UTGST in place of SGST
Do you need to register?
Registration is generally required once your annual turnover crosses the threshold for your state and type of business, and in some cases regardless of turnover, such as interstate supply of goods. Every registered business receives a 15-character GSTIN.
Regular returns
Most regular taxpayers file GSTR-1 for outward supplies and GSTR-3B as a summary return with tax payment. Small businesses may choose the composition scheme with simpler filing.
Signing your returns
Companies and LLPs must file GST returns with a Digital Signature Certificate. Other taxpayers can use EVC (OTP) or a DSC.
